Superior Corrosion Resistance

The most compelling advantage of stainless steel cable cleats lies in their exceptional corrosion resistance. Unlike aluminium or polymer alternatives, stainless steel—particularly the 316L grade—offers outstanding protection against aggressive environmental conditions. Often referred to as "marine grade" stainless steel, 316L contains molybdenum, which provides resistance against chlorides commonly found in coastal and offshore environments. This makes stainless steel cleats inherently suitable for use in coastal areas, marine vessels, offshore oil and gas platforms, and other installations where exposure to salt spray, humidity, and corrosive chemicals is inevitable.

For less demanding environments, 304-grade stainless steel (A2) offers excellent corrosion resistance in most circumstances, though it is susceptible in atmospheres where chlorides are present. The 316L variant (A4), however, provides the ultimate protection—ensuring long-term reliability even in the harshest of environments. This durability translates directly into reduced maintenance costs, extended service life, and uninterrupted operations—factors that are particularly critical in industries where downtime can be extraordinarily expensive.

Non-Magnetic Properties and Eddy Current Prevention

Another significant advantage of stainless steel cable cleats is their non-magnetic nature. Cable cleats are typically manufactured from austenitic stainless steel due to its non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant properties. This characteristic is crucial because it ensures the cable cleat will not induce eddy currents or cause localized heating of low, medium, or high voltage cables.

Eddy currents can lead to significant energy losses and overheating, potentially compromising cable insulation and overall system safety. While austenitic stainless steel may become slightly magnetic as a result of work hardening during processing, this magnetism is barely detectable and is not significant from an eddy current perspective. This makes stainless steel an ideal material for cable cleats used in high-voltage applications where electromagnetic interference must be minimized.
